Mohkave and Ruhahde walked towards Ishtasapa's lodge. Although past dawn, the sun hid behind a line of dark clouds. This gloomy morning won't help Ishtasapa's mood. Behind them, Tsus pulled a karrete. They had come from Nuve Speranse yesterday. This morning he and Ruhahde would help her move to Nuve Speranse. As they approached her lodge, he heard Ishtasapa crying. “We need to cheer her up.”

“No esta posible.”

Maybe, but we should try. “Ios tratos. Fablos positivameli.”

Ruhahde looked skeptical. “Okee.”

He leaned into the entry of her lodge. “Ishtasapa, you ready for Ruhahde and me to help?”

“I guess so.”

Ruhahde followed him in. Ishtasapa sat on the floor, water from her eyes running down her cheeks. She stared into the gray, cold ashes of the fire pit. He looked at Ruhahde and then spoke softly. “Tsus waits outside. The karrete he pulls can hold anything you want to bring. We can move you easily.”

“Easy to move my things but hard for me to move. I thought I would live in this lodge my whole life.”

He squeezed her shoulder lightly. “We can help you build a new lodge in Nuve Speranse whenever you desire.”

Ruhahde added, “The three of us will become even better friends, and you'll make new friends. Raul, Kamau, Naami, Paki, Aro…”

“You forgot Jiuagunsapat?” She laughed and sniffled at the same time.

He and Ruhahde both laughed. “Maybe she'll surprise us. Her brother says now that Naami has agreed to train her as a warrior, she seems happier than before and treats him nicer.” He offered her his hand. She took it, and he pulled her to her feet.

She smiled through watery eyes as she looked at her hides, tools, and other belongings. “I feel like when I leave this lodge of my family, I leave my family. You understand what I mean?”

Ruhahde nodded. “I understand exactly, but I discover that I no longer miss my family's lodge. I still have the same memories. Memories have more meaning than a lodge.”

She stared at the fire pit. “I hope I'll feel the same way.” She stood and began pointing out things for them to carry out to the karrete. Her things were few, but it took a while to empty all the corn and beans out of her underground cache.

She looked around one final time. The last few containers of corn stood near the opening of the cache. “We can load the last of my corn and go.” They helped her load it into the karrete. Tsus seemed to sense her sadness and nuzzled her as she walked past him.

She gently rubbed his muzzle and then wiped the water from her face. “Let's go.” She didn't look back at her lodge.

He chatted with Ruhahde as they walked, but Ishtasapa said nothing. She never looked around or back. She only looked forward. They left the village behind.

Ishtasapa finally broke her silence more than halfway to Nuve Speranse. “Your mother told me Raul showed her a new tool for making pots. She said the tool helps make pots and bowls much faster.
